Caleb Chronicles- First Two Months

My goal is to post on Caleb's milestones about once/month along with a few of the new pictures with his stuffed animals to see how he's grown. And boy has he grown! (You can click on the pictures to make them bigger...)

Caleb was born 8 lbs. 12.5 oz but lost the usual 10% in the first few days. At first, he slept most of the day and was only awake and not eating for about 1/2 hour or so. We had to wake him up for most of his feedings or he would just snooze away next to us in bed. As an added bonus, he cried only about 10-15 minutes total per day, so I'd say we had it pretty easy...

In the first month, Caleb quickly learned to hold up his head and even smiled at mommy around 3.5 weeks old. Boy, how that smile can melt a mom's heart and make it all worth it. Caleb also stuck out his tongue for the first time after getting his tongue frenulum (little flap of skin underneath) clipped so he wasn't tongue tied anymore. If he wasn't eating fast enough before, now the floodgates were opened! At 10 days old, Caleb settled happily into his first warm bath (he really likes baths!) and, at 1 month, slept his first night in his bassinet. Rather quickly, the bassinet moved from beside our bed to Caleb's new temporary sleeping quarters, Kayle's walk-in closet. Mommy just couldn't sleep with her super sonic hearing and Caleb's baby dreaming sighs and moans. Daddy, however, doesn't seem to have much trouble sleeping through the night feedings and changings! Even with him farther away, I can still hear him move and cry without a baby monitor, but at least it's not QUITE so sleep-depriving...

By 2 months old, Caleb was already 13.5 lbs and 25 inches long. His body was in the 95th percentile for weight, 90th percentile for height, but only 25th percentile for head size. Built like a linebacker! (although mommy doesn't want to think of her little baby playing football...ever.) He started sleeping through the night inconsistently, soon after mommy decided he was gaining plenty of weight not to be woken up to eat anymore. By the way, "sleeping through the night" usually means more like wake up at 4-5 am and 8-9 am, but at least there's a good 6-7 hour chunk in there somewhere. There is still no semblance of a regular schedule or daily naptimes, but I can hardly complain about that.

As for "talents", Caleb can now support his own weight standing and sitting (but not even close to balance), track objects and people with his eyes, and respond to voices. He is very strong for his age due to his small head and daily exercises with daddy, who rolls him on the exercise ball, hangs him by his arms and upside-down, has him stand and "jump," and holds him in a superman pose. Despite making mama nervous about baby torture, Caleb seems to enjoys playing with daddy and hardly ever cries. Of course, he could be concentrating too hard or just plain too stunned to cry...

In other news, Caleb loves to smile, especially when he's "rescued" from his bassinet in the morning. Of course, he also has much more "fussy time" than in the beginning and does a hyperventilating, hysterical cry if he doesn't get what he wants/needs almost immediately (sin nature peeking out?). Caleb's pediatrician said the dry skin on his head and face (cradle cap) might be worsened by intolerances to mommy's diet and suggested I take breaks from eating/drinking milk, citrus, eggs, and chocolate (what else is there?!?!). I still haven't quite figured out which ones bother him for sure, since I haven't been terribly consistent, and he alternates between getting better and worse without it ever going away completely. Finally, Caleb enjoyed his first taste of real food at 2 months old as he happily licked off of mama's fruit popsicle with a big grin on his face.
